You can read a lot of posts online now a days from top domainers on how to optimise the selling value of your domain when selling to an end user. All these posts are good and most usually have different takes on selling to an end user, or each domainer adds their own spin to their post. There is not a step by step guideline that one has to take, but there are some steps that you should.
I ‘am writing this post now, to put all these steps together including my own so that you may have a solid guide and foundation to work upon when contacted by an end user.
Firstly, when you receive an email from an end user who is interested in your domain, don’t get so excited straight away and rush into things, I myself and friends of mine have fallen victims to scam messages from end users. These are usually the ones offering upfron $15,000 for your domain if you get them appraised by one of their listed companies. Anyway that’s a separate post. But you do need to make sure that the email is legit.
Teendomainer.com made a good point, firstly you should Google search the users Name, email, and phone number to try and build a description of who the person is that you are connecting with. If the name is a common name you can always try searching for 3 things together. If you cannot find any information on the end user you can always try using http://www.intelius.com/ this site allows you to look up a lot of information on a person for a fee of just $5 this is not much to ask considering it may help you fix a nice deal for your domain.
Now if you get the information that you need, once again don’t go rushing to send the email. Believe me I’ve jumped straight to the email and lost out on a lot of money by doing so. You end up selling for too little just because you want too make a quick buck. You maybe have owned the domain in question for years what harm will an extra few hours or even a day of research do just hold out and get the best possible sale for your domain.
Now what you need to do is search for companies that use the same keywords as the company or end user trying to buy your domain and that use the keywords that make up your domain. As Bruce Marler says in his post he goes to Adwords and checks what companies are bidding on the keywords. It is then time to email or maybe ring them companies and speak to their head of marketing and see if they are interested in purchasing your domain name. Let them know that you have had an offer or that an end user is interested in your domain name.
If you get companies interested you can then email the end user back stating the bid from the other companies. Once you give the end user the price that you want you can begin negotiating. You have now got companies in a bidding war for your domain, this will help to life the value of the domain and help you get the best possible result for your domain. It has helped me and I hope that it helps you too.
What do you do when an end user contacts you? Please let me know some of your tips and tricks.
